Disaster Recovery for a Critical Server
By John Mettie
You can call it whatever you like, network disaster recovery, IT disaster recovery, business recovery or server disaster recovery, as a small business owner and computer consultant, I understand how the downtime of a server with a live, data entry intense database is unquestionably the single largest threat any business may face.
Obviously, the proper securing of any data processing files, as well as all other applications and user files, entails planning and testing in advance of this loss, not scrambling to recover after the disaster has occurred.
Many businesses with little or no IT help are regulated to the tape backup procedures that require reinstallation and restoring of OS’s and applications at tremendous time and expense and inevitably some of the data will be lost or out of date.
The leading cause of downtime and data lost is an inadequate, untested plan in place for data processing disaster recovery due to the complication and expense of most published data recovery procedures and services to the business owners.
Any respectable data processing disaster recovery plan does require some up-front investment, and should include an ongoing service fee to continue to monitor and test the servers and disaster recovery process. Keeping these fees at a minimum should be one of the goals in a proper disaster recovery plan.
What I provide to my customers is a relatively inexpensive, not to complicated, tried and tested solution for server and workstation disaster recovery, using off the shelf hardware and software. No complicated clustering, synchronizing, or 50+ step disaster recovery plans.
I would be happy to post or e-mail the procedures I use to any who might be interested.
